Spanish Troops Depart for Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon

Over 250 Spanish soldiers from the Guzmán el Bueno X Brigade, led by Minister of Defense Margarita Robles, have departed for Lebanon as part of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission. The mission aims to bridge peace in the volatile region amid ongoing conflicts.


The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has sent off more than 250 soldiers from the Guzmán el Bueno X Brigade who have departed for Lebanon as part of the Spanish contingent in the Unifil mission. The Spanish soldiers take over from the ‘Aragón’ Brigade at a crucial moment for peace in a conflict-ridden region.

Robles emphasized the importance of the mission in Lebanon, highlighting the fundamental role of the soldiers as peace intermediaries in such a tumultuous area, especially with the recent fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The minister thanked the soldiers for their commitment to peace and security, praising their essential work in de-escalating conflicts and assisting the civilian population.

During the farewell, senior military leaders were present, such as Admiral Teodoro López Calderón and Army General Amador Enseñat. Additionally, it was announced that a ROLE 2F composed of 17 soldiers will also join the mission in the coming dates.

Robles praised the commitment and dedication of the soldiers, recognizing the emotional day as they say goodbye to their families, while also highlighting the deep pride that Spaniards feel for these professionals. She highlighted the effectiveness, commitment, and values represented by Spanish soldiers in international missions.

The Spanish contingent in Lebanon consists of about 600 soldiers commanded by Brigadier General Fernando Ruiz Gómez. The aim is to enhance capabilities in various medical fields and reinforce diagnostic means. The new contingent includes soldiers from different units of the Army, with support from logistical units and personnel from other countries such as Brazil, Serbia, and El Salvador.
